Hand wash mortar and pestle with warm water and rinse thoroughly. Avoid using soap as it may leach unwanted flavors into the stone.
Wipe the wood base with a damp cloth.
Maintain wood by conditioning it with oil as needed. The ash wood body is treated with natural, food-safe oil. We recommended conditioning twice a year with heavy use. -

Season the mortar by repeatedly grinding dry rice until powdered, and adding a small amount of water to create a paste. Repeat several times until powder and paste are white and grit-free. Rinse with water to remove any remaining rice.
